Nancy Pelosi is Determined to be the House Democrats’ Leader
Nancy Pelosi is determined to win back her seat as the House Democrats’ leader. Despite her possible opposition from Ohio’s Tim Ryan, she is confident that she will retain her position. Pelosi insists, even if Ryan challenges her, that she could easily beat back Ryan’s attempts.
Pelosi announced her decision to run yesterday. She sent a letter to the 193 current and incoming members asking for their support. She told them she already has more than enough committed voters to win the House Democratic Leader. Ryan, and any other possible contender, realize that knocking off Pelosi was a long shot. Ryan suggested that there be a review of party leadership and a new focus on working-class voters following the Democratic losses in last week’s elections.
Pelosi has led the Democratic Caucus for 14 years. Not only has she served the time she is also a prolific fundraiser. During her tenure, she has raised $568 million. She is also known for her ability to whip voters and to keep her caucus in line. Members complain in private that Pelosi has accumulated so much power that she had effectively become the entire leadership team. Other members question how much her fund raising ability matters if they pick up a small number of seats in elections.
Rep. Bill Pascrell of New Jersey summed it up by saying, “When you get close to election time, you’ll see who’s at the starting gate. I would not be surprised if there is not on except Nancy.”
