Today is the day. It’s nothing to laugh about. It’s nothing to joke about. It is a serious moment when our president is impeached by the United States House of Representatives. This is about to happen. Most of us remember the impeachment of Richard M. Nixon and William Jefferson Clinton. Nixon resigned. Clinton was found not guilty.
Impeachment is the process by which a legislative body brings charges against a government official. Impeachment does not remove the official from office; it is similar to an indictment; therefore it is essentially the statement of charges against the official. In this situation, there are two articles of impeachment brought against President Trump.
Once the impeachment has been passed today the Senate will make arrangements for the trial. It is believed it will begin immediately in 2020. As of now, it is believed President Trump will not be convicted. One reason for this is that the Republicans hold the most seats in the Senate. There will not be enough Senators to vote for the president to be removed from office.
The term impeachment will follow President Trump for the remainder of his life just as it has for former President Bill Clinton. Since the presidential elections will be held in November 2020 no one is certain if this will be a positive or a negative for the president as well as all members running for a governmental position. As the saying goes, “only time will tell.”
