The tallest man in the world, according to the Guinness World Records, is Sultan Kosen. The man, who lives in Turkey, measures 8 ft 2.8 in (251 cm). He is the first man over 8 ft. tall measured by GWR in more than 20 years. Guinness knows of only ten confirmed or reliable cases in the history of humans measuring 8 ft or more. He assumed the title from Xi Shun, a Chinese man, who measured 7 ft 8.95 in 2005.
The man also holds the title for the largest hands of a living person. Each one measures 11.22 in from the wrist to the tip of the middle finger. Imagine a hand nearly one foot long!
Sultan has added another record by having the largest feet of any living person. His left foot measures 1 ft 2 in, while his right foot measures 1 ft 1.98 in. After he was told he would be a part of the Guinness records, he said, “I never imagined I would be in the book. I dreamed about it, but it was still a huge surprise.”
Sultan Suffers From Pituitary Gigantism
Sultan suffers from an over-production from the pituitary gland in the brain known as “pituitary gigantism.” If the gland is damaged by something, such as a tumor, it might release too much (or too little) hormone. This results in an over-production, which creates large hands, painful joints, and a thickening of the bones.
Growth Started At Age 10
Sultan’s mom and dad, as well as his three brothers and one sister, are all ‘normal’ sized. His growth spurt started when he was ten years old. He has finally stopped growing. This resulted ten years ago when the University of Virginia, USA, provided a gamma-knife surgery on the tumor affecting his pituitary gland.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Sultan never finished high school. Today he works part-time as a farmer to help support his family. When asked if there are any advantages to being tall, he says he can help his mother with different jobs, such as changing a light bulb or hanging curtains. The disadvantages include not being able to find clothes or shoes that fit. He also finds it difficult to fit into a regular size car.
The Joys In His Life
Sultan enjoys spending time with his family. He also likes to listen to music, play computer games, and watch movies. He also has hopes for the future. He says, “I want what everyone else wants… a family, a nice home. I’d also like the chance to find some decent clothes that fit. I’ve already had a suit made for me, and at least one dream has come true. I now own a pair of jeans made, especially for me.” Sultan married Merve Dibo in 2013. She stands 5 foot 9 inches.
