Woman Sentenced to a Minimum of 26 Years
Woman sentenced for drowning three of her children while failing in her attempt on a fourth. The 37-year-old drove a SUV carrying four of her seven children into the lake in Melbourne, Australia in April, 2015. Alual, 5, survived when passersby pulled her from the partially submerged car. Bol, her 16-month-old son, as well as her 4-year-old twins, Anger and Madit all drowned in the lake. Lex Lasry, the Victoria state Supreme Court Justice said he would have sentenced the mother to life in prison if she had not pleased guilty to murder and attempted murder.
Woman Sentenced After Brutal Drownings
The judge told Akon Guode, “People don’t understand why you did what you did. In my opinion, your actions were the product of extreme desperation. Guode cried and wailed through her sentencing hearing as the judge outlined her crimes and her troubled life that led to the drownings. The judge referred to her background. She was one of 16 children in 1979. She fled Sudan’s civil war in which her husband died. She watched as he was shot to death before she was repeatedly raped until she was unconscious. She arrived in Australia as a refugee in 2006. Once she serves her sentence she will most likely be deported.
Guode was sentenced to 26 years six months in prison; however, it is possible she might be released in 20 years.
