By the year 2030, robots might replace one-third of the existing workforce. This means that during this decade, millions of workers in the US might need to find another way to earn their living.
Previous Predictions Are Coming To Life
Do you remember “The Jetsons?” Do you remember how well-behaved their Robo-maids were? They completed a lot of the housework, and, today, there are Robo-maids working in some households. This is just the beginning. According to UC Berkeley scientist Stuart Russell, “…we need to prepare for a very different future economy.”
Fewer Jobs Because Of Robots
The future means there will be fewer jobs in manufacturing. Call centers will have fewer employees. Truck drivers will find fewer jobs. Robots will even be working more in health care, home care, and construction. AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Liz Shuler believes that automation is one of the biggest challenges we’re facing as a country, and it’s not getting the attention it deserves. She said, “The scare tactics are a little extreme.” She noted that the reports of tens of millions of American jobs lost by 2030 might be overstated.
What’s Going On?
Since 2000, 1.7 million jobs have been lost to automation. Where mundane jobs are concerned, 25% of jobs are facing the risk of being automated. It is suggested that artificial intelligence (AI) will replace 40% of jobs worldwide during the next 15 years. During this decade, it is predicted that AI will create 2.3 million jobs.
AI Is Taking Over Our Jobs
What we all need to know is that job automation is replacing human labor in the workplace. Computer-controlled devices and other electronics are taking over the jobs that we humans once performed. Job automation also involves substituting knowledge-based occupations with technology. AI and machine learning make it possible for robots to carry out tasks that previously required human intellect.
Jobs Most Susceptible
Jobs that involve routine activities, physical labor, and information collection or processing are very likely to be automated in the future. Most professions will face some job losses due to AI. For example, mail clerks and mail machine operations face a 93.7% chance of being automated. Food preparation workers face a 91.4% while short-order cooks face a 91.2% chance of being replaced. Transportation will also be hit, particularly dredge operations, machine feeders, and off bearers. Brookings Institutes predicts that 100% of these jobs will be replaced by AI.
McKinsey Global Institute Predictions
During this decade, McKinsey Global Institute suggests that machinery installation and repair workers, along with emergency first responders might experience employment decline due to AI. The institute suggests that 25% to 34% of financial workers will face employment decline by 2030. Computer support workers and administrative assistants are looking at a 5% to 14% decline. These are just some of the possibilities and predictions. No one can say with 100% certainty that these possibilities will become probabilities.
Jobs That Look Safe For The Future
If you are a doctor, health technician, or therapist, your job is most likely not going to be replaced by AI. These jobs might even increase during this decade. The need for childcare professionals is expected to increase in the future significantly. Teachers and other education professionals are expected to be in more demand during this decade. There are many other professions that AI cannot replace during these ten years – try to make sure you choose to enter one of these fields.
We Need To Prepare For The Future
We need to evaluate our present job. We might think AI can never take over our job; however, if there is that possibility, now is the time to prepare for the future. In order to do this, we need to acquire new skills, expand our knowledge, and stay relevant in our ever-changing times. We need to develop our abilities. This can be accomplished in many ways. A person can enroll in classes to learn new skills. Online courses are becoming a very popular way to improve one’s knowledge. Studying new vocations will assist a person in the future. The most important thing is this: be prepared. Don’t wait until the last minute when you see that new robot walking into your place of business ready to go to work.
