Trump Wins the Votes Needed to Become 45th President
Today was the real date for electing the new president, and Trump wins. The Electoral College got together in all 50 states today to ensure Trump will be the 45th president. Some anti-Trump forces made an effort to persuade Republican electors to abandon Trump. However, the cause was basically useless and the lobbying effort was to no avail.
Trump Wins and Tweets His Message
Trump sent one of his tweets saying, “We did it! Thank you to all of my great supporters, we just officially won the election (despite all of the distorted and inaccurate media).” Later he issued the following statement, “With this historic step we can look forward to the bright future ahead. I will work hard to unite our country and be the President of all Americans.”
Republican Ohio Gov John Kasich, one of the President-elect’s fiercest rivals, said it was time to get behind Trump. He said, “We want unity, we want love.” The Ohio governor refused to endorse the new president or even vote for him in the election.
When the final tally was announced it gave 304 votes to Trump and 227 to Hillary Clinton. Two hundred seventy electoral votes are needed to win the office. Texas was the state that put Trump over the top.
On Jan 6 a joint session of Congress is scheduled to certify the results. Vice President Joe Biden will preside over the results. This is the last step before Trump is sworn in on Jan 20.
