Trump Jr. and Russia Meeting
Donald Trump Jr. has released, what he says, is the “entire email chain”of conversations regarding a disputed meeting with a Russian attorney, Natalia Veselnitskaya. The meeting appeared to be an offer to provide the president’s son information that would “incriminate” Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton as “part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr Trump.” The chain of emails was purported to be between Trump Jr. and publicist Rob Goldstone. The exchanges took place in June 2016. Goldstone went on to set up the June 9 meeting with the Russian lawyer. Goldstone identified the lawyer in one email as “The Russian government attorney who is flying over from Moscow.”
Aras and Emin, Father and Son
Trump Jr. said he knew “Emin” from his association with the 2013 Miss Universe pageant in Russia. He apparently was referring to Emin Agalarov whose father, Aras Agalarov is a billionaire with reported ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump Jr. wrote in an email, “Seems we have some time and if it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer.”
The Russian attorney has denied in an interview with NBC having “any damaging or sensitive information about Hillary Clinton.” She said, “It was never my intention to have that.” Donald Trump Jr. has also denied any wrongdoing occurred in the meeting which then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner also attended.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, blasted the Trump administration. She said, “There’s no escaping it: the Trump Campaign’s inner circle met with an agent of a hostile foreign power to influence the outcome of an American election. The American people face a White House riddled with shadowy Russian connections and desperate to hide the truth.”
President Trump has denied knowing about or attending the meeting.
