Trump Attacks Civil Rights Icon
Trump attacks civil rights icon, John Lewis, Democrat of Georgia. Lewis said he did not view President-elect Donald Trump as a “legitimate president.” He also said he planned to boycott the inauguration which will be the first one he skips in three decades.
Trump Attacks Lewis in Yet Another Twitter
“Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results,” Trump twittered. This was followed by another Trump twitter, “All talk, talk, talk – no action or results, Sad!”
Some were uncomfortable with Mr. Lewis’s assertion. However, Trump’s outburst drew indignation from a number of people who pointed out the negative attack on a civil rights leader on the eve of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Mr. Lewis was one of the original Freedom Riders. He was beaten by police officers during his march from Selma to Montgomery in Alabama.
Mr. Lewis, 76, has long been seen as one of the few genuinely historic figures on Capital Hill. He is revered by Democrats and Republicans alike. Some suggest that fighting with Mr. Lewis distracted attention from a Senate investigation, announced the day before, that will look at possible contacts between Mr. Trump’s campaign team and Russia. The President-elect’s poll numbers have also slipped to lows unlike other incoming presidents. A Gallup poll, released yesterday, found that about half of Americans disapprove of Mr. Trump’s transition effort.
