President Trump Defends Putin’s Reputation
President Trump spoke with Bill O’Reilly on a pre-Super Bowl interview. The host asked Trump about Vladimir Putin as a “killer.” The President responded, “There are a lot of killers. We’ve got a lot of killers. What do you think? Our country’s so innocent?”
President Trump, Does He Respect Putin?
During the interview O’Reilly asked Trump if he respects the Russian president. Trump answered the question by saying, “I do respect him, but I respect a lot of people. That doesn’t mean I’m going to get along with him.”
After being in office for a little more than two weeks, the US President showed no signs of yielding to demands within his own party as to distance himself from Vladimir Putin. Mainstream Republicans have asked Trump to do so; however, this has had little impact on the president. During his election campaign Trump would not criticize the Russian leader and said that better relations with the Kremlin would be in the US national interest.
Following the interview, Michael McFaul, a former ambassador to Russia under former president Obama’s administration, described Trump’s comments as “disgusting.” He went on to write, “This moral equivalency that Trump continues to draw between the USA and Russia is disgusting,” he wrote on Twitter.
So, only time will tell if Trump and Putin will become bosom buddies; or, if Trump and Putin will become bitter enemies – is anyone taking bets?
