The 23rd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) have nominated “Manchester By The Sea” for four awards. These awards are significant because they are peer honored with actors voting on the best film and television performances of the year.
The SAG Awards will be broadcast on January 29 from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Lily Tomlin, starring in “Grace and Frankie,” will receive the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award.
“Manchester By The Sea” led the nominations and was followed by “Fences” and Moonlight” which each received three. The nominees for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture include “Captain Fantastic,” “Fences,” “Hidden Figures,” “Manchester by the Sea,” and “Moonlight.” Nominees for outstanding female actors in a motion picture include Amy Adams, Emily Blunt, Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, and Meryl Streep. The male actor in a motion picture nominations include Casey Affleck, Andrew Garfield, Ryan Gosling, Viggo Mortensen, and Denzel Washington.
In the television categories Netflix received 17 nominations followed by 13 for HBO.
A surprise exclusion was the movie “Scully” starring Tom Hanks. The film was overlooked by SAG as well as the Golden Globes. The movie has received glowing reviews as well as receiving big dollars at the box office. Perhaps the biggest film surprise was “Captain Fantastic.” The surprise was that the entire cast received the nomination for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture.
