Kim Jong-un, North Korea at it Again
Kim Jong-un, North Korea have taken another step to rile the feathers of the US. This time they have ‘detained’ another US citizen. The charge is ‘suspicion of “hostile acts” against the state.’ The state-run news agency, KCNA said that Kim Hak-song has been detained. He worked at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST).
Three Other US Detainees Still Held in North Korea
Kim Hak-song is the fourth US detainee to be held by Pyongyang. The other three include: Kim Sang-duck. He has been detained since last month for allegedly attempting to “overturn” the government. He was a lecturer at PUST. Kim Dong-chul has been sentenced to ten years’ hard labor for spying last year. The fourth detainee is student Otto Warmbier, 22, who was sentenced to 15 years’ hard labor for trying to steal a propaganda sign from a hotel.
In the past the US has accused North Korea of detaining its citizens to use them as pawns. Supposedly each detainee receives an investigation in regards to their charges. According to KCNA “a relevant institution” was “conducting a detailed investigation” into Kim Hak-song’s alleged crimes. No further details were given.
The latest detention comes during significant tensions between North Korea and the US. This results from Pyongyang’s threatening to carry out a new nuclear test. The US has reacted by sending warships to the area with a vow to stop the country from developing nuclear weapons. Another sore spot is that North Korea has accused the US and South Korean agents of plotting to kill the Supreme Leader, Kim Jong-un. The two countries did not respond to the allegations although experts were skeptical about the claim. The latest detainee is also a major source of concern for the US.
