2016 Theme: Global Applause – Give Volunteers a Hand
International Volunteer Day, December 5 – the 2016 theme is: Global Applause – Give Volunteers a Hand. The UN General Assembly has designated December 5, of each year, to be the International Volunteer Day (IVD). They see this as a unique opportunity for various groups to celebrate their efforts, to share their values, and to promote their work with others.
Aside from recruiting thousands of volunteers each year, the UNV program also contributes to peace and development by advocating for the recognition of volunteers and working with partners to integrate volunteering into development programming.
IVN is generally the result of a partnership between the UN system, government, volunteers and organizations, and committed individuals. Together the various individuals and groups work to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. These are a set of time-bound targets. The goals include combating poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation, and discrimination against women.
Ban K-moon, the UN Secretary General offered his message for 2016. In part he said, “I extend my deepest gratitude to the more than 6,700 United Nations Volunteers, 12,000 United Nations Online Volunteers and the one billion community volunteers worldwide. You are all instrumental to the future of people and the planet. Your commitment and passion can act as inspiration to us all.”
Global Applause – give volunteers a hand, recognizes volunteers worldwide and all they do in making peace and sustaining development a reality.
