International Day of Happiness Around the World
International Day of Happiness is celebrated on March 20th. This day was established in 2012 by the United Nations General Assembly in order to acknowledge “the pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human goal.” This is also a day that singer Pharrell Williams has partnered with the United Nations foundation to celebrate the with his recent hit single, “Happy.” So, what can you do to celebrate this yearly event? All you need to do is try to be happy and to make those around you happy.
Sometimes we have a differing outlook on what makes us happy. Some people believe that having money, having a big house or a fast, expensive sports car, or getting married will bring happiness. Author Gretchen Rubin, in her book, “Better Than Before,” stresses that relationships are a key to happiness. Aside from romantic relationships, friendships and other close ties with siblings and colleagues can add to your happiness. She also stresses that being around happy people can bring you happiness as it can be a little contagious.
The author suggests you concentrate on happier rather than happy. Try to find more of it to put in your life. A person can think about being happier, this can actually be a goal in life. For example, if having one child makes you happy; perhaps having two children will make you happier. According to Rubin we need to concentrate on things that can make us happy. This might be anything from taking a walk outside to reading a book. To others, getting enough sleep or exercise can make a person happy.
Finally, the author says that happiness increases with age. This is good to know because we will all grow older. She says that knowing yourself: your nature, values, and interests can add to your happiness.
March 20 is rapidly approaching. It is a day we can bring happiness to our own life. It is also a day we can share happiness with others. If nothing else, let’s have happy thoughts.
