GOP Senator Graham: Investigate Russia
Sen. Lindsey Graham, South Carolina, a contender for president running against President-elect Donald Trump, is calling for investigations into alleged Russian cyberhacks during the recent United States election. The leading Republican lawmaker is calling for the investigations just as Trump is asking for warmer ties with Moscow.
Graham, a South Carolina Republican, is one of the chamber’s most experienced in matters of foreign policy. He says that any attempt by a foreign country attempting to interfere with the United States voting process required a clearer, better understanding as well as a vigorous response.
Sen. Graham said, “Assuming for a moment that we do believe that the Russian government was controlling outside organizations that hacked into our election, they should be punished.” While speaking with reporters and referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin, he added, “Putin should be punished.”
Graham is not only asking for investigations in regards to the election, but he wants hearings to examine all Russia’s “misadventures throughout the world.” He has support from both Republican and Democratic colleagues. As this movement progresses it is possible the results could become a source of tension between the GOP and Trump.
Graham said that hearings into Russia’s activities should also address Moscow’s annexation of Crimea and interference in Ukraine, its cyberattacks against US allies, and examine whether Russia is guilty of war crimes due to its intervention and bombing campaign in Syria.
Graham admitted, “clearly Donald and me have issues.” He added that he will do “everything I can to help him because he will be commander in chief in dangerous times.”
