Dead Child Found in Car Couple Living in
A dead child, three-years-old, was found inside an SUV in California. Authorities say a man and woman, living in the white Toyota Rav-4, parked in the wrong direction, was discovered in Rancho Cordova. The police found Angela Phakhin, mother of the child, and Untwan Smith, the mother’s boyfriend, nearby. After police learned that Smith had an outstanding warrant in Arkansas, for fraud, the officers searched the car. They found the dead, young girl, in the backseat, covered by blankets.
Couple Arrested for Child Endangerment
Phakhin, 27, and Smith, 46, were arrested for child endangerment and conspiracy later in the day after the child was “unresponsive” according to a Sacramento County Sheriff press release. She was pronounced dead at the scene. According to Sergeant Tony Turnbull, from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, “They put the child in a risky situation that most likely caused her death. That’s why they were arrested for child endangerment at this point.” The couple is being held on $1,000,000 bail and appeared at an arraignment in a Sacramento court. Turnbull said, “I know they had enough time to apply for and to get benefits, to get food stamps.”
The police did not find any signs of trauma on the girl’s body. The cause of death will be determined by the coroner’s office after a full autopsy is completed.
Investigators believe the couple arrived in California, from Arkansas, in February. A family member reported that the couple originally planned to go to Texas. The family was surprised they were in California and said they didn’t know their current whereabouts. They have been living out of their car since February.
