Breaking News, the Alert App from NBC News, is Shutting Down
Breaking News, the alert app from NBC News is shutting down at the end of the year. The staff of more than 20 editors, developers and administrative staffers will remain on the NBC News payroll until Jan 20.
Breaking News is Closing After Five Years
Cory Berman, the founder of the breaking news app, tweeted, “This is a breaking story I hoped i’d never report: New News has decided to shut down Breaking News effective Dec 31.” In his second tweet he wrote, “We’re true believers of news that isn’t designed for clicks, but a service that helps people and companies make smarter, safe decisions.” Bergman continued in his third tweet, “As we discovered, such a model doesn’t fit with advertising and despite a surge of interest in our premium data, the money has run out.” The fourth tweet stated, “It has been the greatest honor to work with such a talented team: the industry’s best minds in mobile/social innovation. (Hire ’em!)” Since each tweet can only contain a certain number of characters Berman continued and his eight tweet said, “Stay tuned for more later, including details on how you can hire the best mobile/social talent in business.”
Nick Ascheim, the senior vice president of digital for NBC News sent a note to staff saying the app “has not been able to generate enough revenue to sustain itself.”
Breaking News gave NBC News a great feature for smartphone users around the world. The decision to shut it down will offer the readership to competitors.
