115th Congress Will Try to Undo Obama’s Agenda
115th Congress opened today with the Republicans in charge at all levels. Their goal is to quickly undo eight years of President Barack Obama’s agenda. One of their biggest targets is to repeal Obama’s health care law. Other agenda items will include a look at a tax overhaul, reversing Obama-era environmental regulations and other conservative priorities. Although highly out-numbered, Democractic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi says, her party “stand ready to fight vigorously” to protect health care and other priorities. Pelosi said the Republicans will need to compromise with Senate Democrats to move major legislation through that chamber.
115th Congress Must Confirm a New Cabinet
After President-elect Donald Trump is sworn in on Jan 20, the Republicans in the Senate will spend whatever time is necessary to push to confirm the new Cabinet picks. Democrats will not be able to block the nominees although they have pledged to fight many of them. They are unhappy with what they say is the hypocrisy of Trump’s populist message and his wealthy, corporate-favoring nominees for several posts.
The Senate will begin repealing Obama’s health care law as early as today. Although the Republicans may be successful in repealing parts of the law, some elements of the repeal will not likely go into effect for two to four years.
The leaders of the Republican party want a massive overhaul of the tax system. This would be the first major tax overhaul in 30 years. The goal will be to simplify a complicated tax code. Trump has also advocated a tax overhaul which he promises a tax cut for every income level. His proposal is that more low-income families will pay no income tax at all.
The 115th Congress will also tackle the selection of a Supreme Court Justice. Medicare changes will also be a goal of the Congress. There is also a desire to overhaul Social Security by House conservatives. Since the Republicans have full-control of Congress it looks like 2017 might be a year that they actually accomplish some of their goals.
